RELEASE STATEMENT FROM FR. JAN ANTONIK
Please allow me the opportunity to place in context a matter from Tuesday morning, February 23, 2021 at St. Therese Catholic Church.
While arriving for Mass, a man and his unleashed dog were found sleeping by the door for entry into the back office of the Church. It was very unexpected, and I was startled, not anticipating anyone to be there. Parishioners were beginning to arrive, and Mass was to begin shortly.
Due to the unusual circumstances, Parish staff asked the gentleman to leave. The man began to record the conversation, out of an abundance of caution and safety concerns for the Parishioners and Parish staff, we asked the man to vacate the property. The Sheriff’s Department was notified, for his safety and the safety of the parishioners driving into the Church, when he was standing by US 41.
It is regretful that this situation was heightened by many uncertainties, for which I am deeply sorry. I wish to not have had to notify the Sheriff, however, in today’s climate of Church vandalism, the safety of all is a priority.
St. Therese Parish offers assistance for our sisters and brothers in need through the St. Vincent DePaul Society and Catholic Charities. He would have been encouraged to use these services, had the temperature not risen.
